Harbinger Down – A mix of the Thing and Jaws?

harbinger-down-poster-2015

Harbinger’s official synopsis:

A group of grad students have booked passage on the fishing trawler Harbinger to study the effects of global warming on a pod of Orcas in the Bering Sea. When the ship’s crew dredges up a recently thawed piece of old Soviet space wreckage, things get downright deadly. It seems that the Russians experimented with tardigrades, tiny resilient animals able to withstand the extremes of space radiation. The creatures survived, but not without mutation. Now the crew is exposed to aggressively mutating organisms. And after being locked in ice for three decades, the creatures aren’t about to give up the warmth of human companionship.

It’s a indie sci-fi horror film. The director Alec Gillis and his Amalgamated Dynamics FX team were responsible for the creature design for AVP: Alien vs. Predator and Starship Troopers and had created the practical effects for 2011’s The Thing remake. The crowd-funded Harbinger Down also benefits from a stellar crew of award-winning special effects wizards, including Pat McClung (Armageddon, True Lies) and Robert and Dennis Skotak (The Abyss, Aliens, Terminator 2).

Written and directed by Alec Gillis, Harbinger Down will hit theaters August 7, 2015 and stars Lance Henriksen, Camille Balsamo, Reid Collums and Matt Winston.

Anyway, watching the trailer two things come to mind. The Thing, the monster and story looks all the same, and … come on, “We’re gonna need a bigger bucket”? Remember that famous quote from Jaws, that Brody says when it faces the shark for the first time: “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”
